CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – The National Hurricane Center is monitoring a tropical disturbance for possible development over the next week.

Gradual development is expected to follow, with a tropical depression possible late this week or over the weekend.

The National Hurricane Center is monitoring a tropical disturbance for possible development over the next week.

The system is forecast to drift north or northeast over the southwestern and central Caribbean Sea.

The formation chances in the next 48 hours are almost 0%. The chances over the next seven days are about 40%.

Live 5 First Alert Meteorologist Joey Sovine says cooling water temperatures off the Lowcountry coast make it unlikely this system will have serious impacts to the area.

If it were to develop into the next named storm of the season, the system would likely adopt the name Patty.

After Patty, the remaining names on the list for the 2024 Atlantic storm season are Rafael, Sara, Tony, Valerie and William.
