Good morning! I hope your sports equinox was beautiful.

While you slept: The Yankees blew it

This was the Yankees’ night. The home stands were full. Derek Jeter threw the first pitch. After the Dodgers won the first two at home in LA, a win in New York was a must in this matchup of superstar-heavy teams.

Instead, the Yankees did…mostly nothing. The Dodgers’ 4-2 victory gives them a 3-0 lead in the World Series. No team has overcome such a deficit at this stage. The way this happened – a methodical bulldozing with Dodger bats – is as surprising as anything.

A few takeaways:

  • Freddie Freeman is easily the leader for World Series MVP. He hit another home run last night and has now homered five straight ahead World Series games, dating back to his time with the Braves. That’s a record, and it comes in the same series in which he produced the first walk-off grand slam in World Series history. We’ll talk more about him after this series ends.
  • The conversation in New York is all about the Yankees’ two stars, Aaron Judge and Juan Soto, and for opposite reasons. Judge is absolutely choked in this series, going 1-12 seven strikeouts. Once the series ends, Soto will be a free agent and could qualify as a Yankee for the final time. Double ouch.
  • Can the Yankees come back? They definitely have the talent, but history says not. As our Tyler Kepner noted: Not a 3-0 World Series since 1970 has reached Game 5. The Dodgers can complete the sweep tonight.

Let’s move on to more pain in New York:

While you were watching baseball: The Giants screwed up too

About 400 miles away from Yankee Stadium, the New York Giants took part in a Monday night game against the Pittsburgh Steelers with their season theoretically on the line too, just with much smaller stakes – and they got essentially the same result.

The game was more competitive, a Pittsburgh win 26-18, but the loss dropped the G-Men to 2-6, good for last place in the NFC East. This is when you start thinking about draft choices. Weft.

  • We should probably apologize to Russell Wilsonwho was fantastic last night: 20 of 28, 278 yards and a touchdown, which is perfect for this team. If he can maintain anything close to that level, the Steelers are legitimate contenders. Wild.

Additionally, this play answered a question I had never really thought about: a receiver must get both feet down (and not the same foot twice) to complete a catch. Poor George Pickens:

That counts in my book, George.

News to know

Man Utd’s upset
Erik ten Hag is absent as manager of Manchester United, the team announced yesterday, ending a strange and disappointing spell at one of England’s biggest clubs. It was honestly a shock when the club kept him in the off-season, and he leaves this year with Man Utd in 14th place in the Premier League. In the short term he will be replaced by former striker Ruud van Nistlerooy. In the long term, the club is looking for Ruben Amorim from Sporting Lisbon as its new permanent head coach, a move that has been rumored for some time. As for Ten Hag? He was constantly overwhelmed by a job that, according to Carl Anka, “seems more and more impossible.”

McCaffrey is looking forward to returning
Rejoice, 49ers fans and fantasy owners everywhere: Superstar running back Christian McCaffrey is “on track” to make his season debut in two weeks, coach Kyle Shanahan said, adding that McCaffrey will “go hard” and plan a workout will simulate during the team’s farewell game week. McCaffrey has been suffering from Achilles tendonitis since training camp. View our full report here.

Feedback loop: We are (mostly) on the same page

I had a feeling we were going to have a blowout, but this is a landslide: 98 percent of you think the Dwyane Wade statue is gone. We can agree on that.

Two final thoughts:

  • Yes, it is turned off, but I understand that this is extremely difficult to do. To remind the counter reaction to the statue of Cristiano Ronaldo? I will grant some grace for the sake of art, and affirm that art is difficult.
  • And yet…Wade consulted on this statue several times during the sculpting process! That’s him I’m still very proud of ittoo, and says the jokes are funny. I think it’s still a win overall.

It got the Pulse Brain Trust thinking: Have images gotten worse, or are all those old images we prize as artifacts bad too? Someone needs to get Julius Caesar on the phone.

Watch and listen

đź“ş NHL: Rangers at Capitals
7:30 PM ET on ESPN
A match between division rivals who have both had a good start to the season. Throw it on.

đź“ş NBA: Mavericks at Timberwolves
7:30 PM ET on TNT
These are perhaps two of the most interesting teams in the competition this year, both filled with old and new talent trying to get fit. It’s still weird to see Klay Thompson at a college in Dallas, but so far he seems like a perfect addition.

đź“ş MLB: Dodgers at Yankees
8pm ET on Fox
Could be a series ending. Seeing a demise… or the start of a wild comeback? Probably ruin.

Pulse choices

Mainly, Chris Paul will be remembered for his basketball IQ, and at 39, he is as much a coach as he is a player. That’s exactly why the Tracksloaded with young talent – including, ahem, Victor Wembanyama – signed him. They are already impressed with the CP3 experience.
