The impact of high winds was felt in KC

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Thirty-foot flames and thousands of power outages were reported Tuesday in the Kansas City area as wind gusts approached 50 miles per hour.

Kansas City, Missouri, firefighters were called to a grass fire near 86e Street and Highland Avenue around 11 a.m. Tuesday. Crews continued to work on putting out the hotspots until Tuesday afternoon.

On the Kansas side, nine agencies battled a grass fire in the 10995 230 areae Street in Linwood, Kansas.

An assistant chief with the Leavenworth County Fire Protection District No. 2 described the fire as “major,” but that no construction or injuries had yet been reported.

The Leavenworth County Emergency Management Department said a roof on a building in Linwood, Kansas, was damaged. No injuries were immediately reported.

The agency also reported that crews in Leavenworth were battling a fire with flames 40 feet high.

As of 1:30 p.m., Evergy reported that nearly 2,000 customers were without power in Jackson County, Missouri.

More than 850 customers were without power in Leavenworth County and another 511 customers were without power in Johnson County.

The Kansas City Board of Public Utilities reports that approximately 236 customers were without power.

KSHB 41 Weather meteorologist Cassie Wilson says wind gusts are approaching 50 miles per hour at Kansas City International Airport on Tuesday. There were widespread wind gusts of more than 45 kilometers per hour.

Raymore, Missouri, said a “huge tree” was blocking Highway 58 in both directions.
