Michael Keaton, Mel Brooks and more tribute to the late actress Teri Garr

Teri Garr spent half a century in Hollywood, starring in memorable projects such as Young Frankenstein, Toetsie, Mister MomAnd Friendsso it’s no surprise that her death at the age of 79 was met with heartfelt tributes from friends, fans and collaborators, including Michael Keaton, Mel Brooks and Lisa Kudrow.

Keaton, who starred opposite Garr in the big-screen comedy Mister Mom in 1983, was one of the first to come forward after learning Tuesday that she had died of multiple sclerosis.

“This is a day I feared and knew would come,” Keaton wrote on Instagram. “Forget how great she was as an actress and comedienne. She was a great woman. Not only great to work with, but great to be around. AND go back and watch her comedic work – Man, was she great!! RIP girl.”

Brooks, who sent Garr in Young Frankensteinwrote on social media: “We are very sorry to hear about the passing of Teri Garr. She was so talented and so funny. Her humor and lively spirit made it a pleasure to work on the YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN set. Her” German’ accent had us all involved! She will be greatly missed.”

In a statement to Entertainment weekly, Friends star Kudrow had this to say about the actress who played Phoebe Abbott, the mother of her characters, Phoebe and Ursula Buffay: “Teri Garr was a comedic acting genius who had a huge influence on me and I know I’m not alone in that feeling I feel so lucky and grateful to be working with Teri Garr.”

Dustin Hoffman said of his Toetsie costar in a statement to EW: “Teri was brilliant and unique in everything she did, and had a heart of gold. Working with her was one of the biggest highlights. There was no one like her.”

David Letterman, who welcomed Garr to his late-night talk show several times, remembered her fondly.

“Teri Garr’s Many Appearances Late evening gave it a (cachet) and importance was not possible without her,” he wrote on Instagram, alongside a clip of her sitting at the table with him after receiving an Oscar nomination for Toetsie. “She was a top-notch actor and comedian and a lovely person. A shining star and a true friend of the show. I was lucky to know her. She took everything to the next level, and I’m sad she’s gone is.”

Steve Martin kept it sweet and simple: “I loved her so much.”

Michael McKean, who appeared alongside Garr in the 1999 film Kill the manwrote: “I will always love Teri Garr.”

Jamie Lee Curtis shared a snapshot of Garr Young Frankenstein and wrote, “REST IN LAUGHTER TERI GARR!”

Fellow actress Marilu Henner noted that Garr was someone she looked up to for a long time. “Teri Garr was always my idol,” she wrote on social media. “When she starred opposite my first husband, Frederic Forrest, in One from the heartI was in awe of her dramatic skills, her comedic ease, and her very big heart! Every time I saw her, no matter the struggles, she was always amazing!”

Former Saturday evening live cast member Joe Piscopo praised Garr as “a talented and amazing girl.” He included a photo of the two playing JFK and Marilyn Monroe in a 1983 sketch.

Meanwhile, director Paul Feig called Garr’s death “devastating.”

“Teri was a legend,” he continued. “So funny, so beautiful, so kind. I had the honor of working with her in 2006 and she was everything I dreamed she would be. Truly one of my comedy heroes. I couldn’t have loved her more. This is such a loss.”
