Samuel Ersson, Tyson Foerster Lead Boston Win – NBC Sports Philadelphia

Samuel Ersson was extremely reliable in net and Tyson Foerster showed his ability to give the Flyers a 2-0 victory over the Bruins at TD Garden on Tuesday night.

It wasn’t an offensive masterpiece by the Flyers. But John Tortorella’s team defended hard and well and secured a much-needed victory in a building that had been troubled.

Ersson threw his sixth career shutout. Foerster gave the Flyers a 1-0 lead in the second period and Joel Farabee closed the game with an empty-netter.

The Flyers are 3-6-1 through 10 games. After losing six in a row, they have won two of their last three.

They had allowed four or more goals in seven of their first nine games, so a defensive performance like this came at the right time.

The Flyers were 0-4-0 and had been outscored 19-8 in their previous four trips to TD Garden. The last time they won in Boston was on April 5, 2021. The Flyers played five defensemen in a 3-2 overtime decision: Travis Sanheim, Ivan Provorov, Philippe Myers, Shayne Gostisbehere and Justin Braun. Sanheim, the only one left in Philadelphia, scored the winner.

Tuesday night also marked the Flyers’ first regular-season win at TD Garden since the 2011-12 season opener.

The Flyers will see the Bruins (4-5-1) again Saturday afternoon at the Wells Fargo Center.

• Ersson deflected all 23 shots he faced.

The 25-year-old made some huge saves in the first period to keep the match scoreless. The Flyers obliterated 1:37 minutes of a 5-on-3 Boston power play in the opening stanza. They held their ground in the third period, giving up only three shots.

Ersson’s only hiccup of the night was a miscommunication with Emil Andrae on a power play in the third period that nearly led to a tie for the Bruins.

Boston backup Joonas Korpisalo stopped 17 of the Flyers’ 18 shots.

Samuel Ersson spoke with Brian Boucher and Jim Jackson after his 23-save shutout against the Bruins.

• Tortorella has mentioned Foerster a few times as a young player who needs to improve. The 22-year-old winger answered the call against the Bruins.

He used his biggest asset just over five and a half minutes into the second period to give the Flyers a crucial lead. Foerster scored one home from the slot on a nice feed from Andrae, who picked up his first career NHL point.

That was a big goal for Foerster, who scored 20 goals as a rookie last season but has only one goal so far this season and was a healthy scratch.

Emil Andrae picked up his first career NHL point as Tyson Foerster gave the Flyers a 1-0 lead over the Bruins.

• Andrae was very effective in his second game of the season. The 22-year-old defender played a calm and confident match. His first pass is a strength and the Flyers trusted him both on the power play and in penalty kill.

He certainly deserved a third game in a row.

• The Flyers also got strong games from their other defensemen.

Sanheim and Rasmus Ristolainen were strong at killing plays quickly. Nick Seeler and Jamie Drysdale combined for eight blocked shots. They really fought. And Erik Johnson was steady next to Andrae.

• The Flyers return home Thursday for a Halloween game against the Blues (7 p.m. ET/NBCSP).
