What Anthony Volpe’s mother thought of son’s historic night

Anthony Volpe hugged his mother Isabelle in the hallway outside the Yankees clubhouse not long after delivering the biggest hit of his life – and the biggest of this Yankees season.

Volpe’s grand slam in the bottom of the third inning lifted the Yankees to an 11-4 Game 4 victory over the Dodgers, extending the World Series – and adding another milestone to what has been an incredible road for the New York City native growing up in New Jersey, dreams of playing for the Yankees.

And his parents, Isabelle and Michael, were in the family section of the Stadium to see it.

“This is so surreal,” Isabelle said Tuesday evening. “We were cheering for the Yankees before he was born. This whole thing is a journey. We took him to all these events, spent money to meet (Derek) Jeter when he was eight years old and he wouldn’t even go to him because he was too shy. Now he’s working there. It’s just…”

Not only were they there, but Isabelle said Michael saw the grand slam coming from the family section.

“My husband said he better swing on the first pitch because it’s going to be a fastball,” Isabelle said. “And then: ‘Boom.’ We just looked at each other and then beer flew in the air and everyone hugged. It was pandemonium.”

The pitch was a slider by Daniel Hudson, but Volpe was indeed looking for a fastball.

Volpe’s grandfather, also named Anthony, also witnessed the explosion.

“We needed a big hit, the whole team needed it and he gave it to them,” the senior Volpe said. “After that you couldn’t hear yourself think anymore.”

To top it all off, the entire crowd started chanting “Volpe” later in the game as the Yankees were on their way to forcing Game 5, also in The Bronx.

“This is overwhelming, to say the least,” says Isabelle Volpe. ‘I can only imagine how he feels. We pinched each other during this whole thing. You dream about it, everyone dreams about it, but no one thinks it will happen. His hard work, determination and so much support have all led to this crazy time.”
