Yankees fan grabs Mookie Betts’ glove and tries to pry the ball loose in the World Series

Two overly enthusiastic New York fans were ejected from the Yankees’ do-or-die victory over the Dodgers on Wednesday after ripping a foul ball from the glove of Los Angeles outfielder Mookie Betts.

The bizarre “only in New York” moment occurred when Gleyber Torres led off the bottom of the first inning by popping out to right field at Yankee Stadium.

After Betts grabbed the ball, a Yankees fan in an Aaron Judge jersey wouldn’t let go of Betts’ left hand before untying it.

The effort was all for naught as the referee ruled Torres out from fan interference and stadium security escorted the two men out. “The fans were escorted from Yankee Stadium and ejected following the incident,” a team spokesperson said in a statement.

It was the second time in this series that Torres has been on the wrong end of a fan interference call. In the ninth inning of Game 1, he hit what appeared to be Los Angeles’ go-ahead home run, but a Dodgers fan reached over the wall and it was ruled a double instead.

Otherwise, it was a good night for the Yankees, whose bats came alive to carry them to an 11-4 victory and avoid an embarrassing series sweep on their home field.
