Opinion polls show Kim largely favoring Bashaw in the U.S. Senate contest

RANDOLPH – When Curtis Bashaw visited this Morris County city Sunday morning to launch a local campaign, he was pretty optimistic.

He said he had just stopped by a local restaurant and had been well received by almost everyone. Only people at one table refused to accept his literature.

Addressing his supporters with leafy and colorful trees behind him, Bashaw said independents and even some Democrats will move his way because of the economy and the border.

On the other hand, a poll came out this weekend that showed what most people know, but also something revealing.

And the “revealing” part wasn’t good news for Bashaw, the Republican candidate for Senate.

The poll was conducted by Cygnal, which Real Clear Politics describes as Republican-leaning.

It doesn’t matter. The poll gave Kamala Harris a 52-40 percentage point lead over Donald Trump in New Jersey. No surprise there.

What about Bashaw?

The poll yielded the following

Andy Kim – 51 percent

Bashaw – 32 percent.

Kim

Or if you include the “genetic” responses of undecided voters, the findings are Kim at 55 percent and Bashaw at 38 percent.

Some of those who vote for Trump will therefore not vote for the Republican Senate candidate, according to the poll.

Of course, this could be an anomaly.

On the other hand, we have seen some right-wing groups express dismay over Bashaw’s support for abortion rights. Remember, pro-lifers make up a large part of the GOP base.

This poll may indicate that some religious conservatives will vote for Trump, but not Bashaw.

Asked about the poll, Bashaw remained confident and said things will change when his ads “go up,” which will happen this week.

He also took some solace in the fact that Kim was at “only” 51 percent in one interpretation of the poll, which is hardly a majority.

Keep in mind that “positive spin” is a big part of politics.
