Tottenham 2-1 Man City (October 30, 2024) Game analysis

Tottenham Hotspur held on for a 2-1 win over Manchester City in the Carabao Cup in north London on Wednesday, handing Pep Guardiola’s side their first defeat of the season so far.

The win sent Tottenham through to the quarter-finals of the competition and keeps their boss Ange Postecoglou in with a chance to fulfill his promise of winning a trophy in his second season as coach of the club after an outstanding attacking performance.

City made seven changes to the side that beat Southampton 1-0 at the weekend – including Erling Haaland who sat out the entire match – and they were opened up early as Spurs played quickly through the press.

Dejan Kulusevski picked out Timo Werner in the penalty area and the German striker smashed the ball into the net for his first goal of the season.

Pape Matar Sarr got the second in the 25th minute after the ball found its way to him outside the penalty area following a well-worked corner, and the Senegalese midfielder brilliantly curled the ball inside the right post.

City pulled one back in first-half stoppage time when Matheus Nunes connected with a Savinho cross and scored with their first effort on target.

Having already lost key players this season, Guardiola said he wanted his side to perform well without injuries, but unfortunately Savinho suffered a blow that forced him to be stretchered off in the 62nd minute.

That robbed City of some of their momentum, but Nico O’Reilly still almost grabbed the late equalizer, only for substitute Yves Bissouma to clear the ball off the line as Spurs held on for a 2–1 win.
