Could Ty Jerome be a mainstay in the rotation?

The Cleveland Cavaliers host the Detroit Pistons in their season opener tonight. Here’s your news and links to get you to gametime.

The first sip

Kenny Atkinson decided to go with a 10-man rotation before the offseason against the Toronto Raptors. Whether or not he would have gone to that rotation if Darius Garland had three personal fouls in the first quarter and another in the second is unknown. However, we know that Ty Jerome made the most of his opportunity, recording 14 points, six assists and two steals in 19 minutes.

Jerome made an immediate impact in the second quarter. He assisted on four baskets in that quarter alone. It was all the bigs’ intention to keep the momentum going during their incredible second quarter run.

These plays all show that he understands where the bigs need the ball and where the windows are to feed them. That’s something the Cavs haven’t had as a backup point guard since Ricky Rubio.

It would be unwise to make too much of one outing against a bad Toronto team. But continuing to set up the bigs like he did as a primary and secondary playmaker would be incredibly helpful for the Cavs. Whether he can keep that up is a separate question and will determine whether he can be a mainstay in the rotation.

The second sip

Evan Mobley was phenomenal in the season opener. Tony Pesta wrote a good overview of why he could be so dominant. You can read that HERE. I highly recommend you also watch his video below.
