From the big screen to trick-or-treating, 2024’s hit movies inspire the trendiest Halloween costumes

The latest Hollywood hits are shaping this year’s Halloween costume trends.

CBS News’ data team used Google Trends’ annual FrightGeist tool and box office data to see how many of this year’s most popular costumes were inspired by characters from top-grossing films. From rebooted classics to new superhero innovations, people are dressing up as characters they’ve seen in theaters all year.

Data from the tool shows that the films that inspire the most popular costume ideas don’t always top the box office. Leading the costume trend is Shrunken Head Bob from the 2024 sequel ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’, even though this film is the fourth highest grossing film in its own country this year.

Despite “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool & Wolverine” dominating the box office as the top two films this year, their costumes rank slightly lower on Google’s FrightGeist list of most popular costumes.

The data team discovered a correlation between FrightGeist’s most popular costumes and their influence by some of the top ten grossing films.

We looked at five films from which the most popular costumes come from: “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” “Deadpool & Wolverine,” “Dune: Part 2,” “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” and “Inside Out 2.”

Of the five, ‘Inside Out 2’ and ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ have the highest search interest in the US over the past twelve months.

Nationwide, more states searched for “Inside Out 2” (31 states) compared to “Deadpool & Wolverine” (19 states) in the last 12 months. The District of Columbia was the only US region with a different top search, with “Dune: Part 2” favored.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Over the past 12 months, search interest in the original “Beetlejuice” in the U.S. was nearly three times that of the new film. Of the five films, this sequel was the only film that was less sought after than the original.

Inside out 2

“Inside Out 2” generated nearly twice as much search interest in the U.S. last year as the original “Inside Out”

Deadpool and Wolverine

“Deadpool & Wolverine” generated more than twice as much search interest in the U.S. last year as the original “Deadpool.”

Dune: part two

“Dune: Part Two” generated slightly more search interest than “Dune: Part One” in the US last year.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” had more than three times the search interest of “Godzilla vs. Kong” (the American prequel) and had slightly higher search interest than “Godzilla Minus One” (the 2023 Japanese film).
