Trump’s stop in a blue-leaning state could boost a Republican effort to flip the Democratic-held Senate seat

The Republican Senate candidate in New Mexico says former President Trump’s stop in the blue-leaning southwestern state on Thursday will “give our state a lot of momentum.”

Nella Domenici, the 2024 Republican Senate candidate and the daughter of New Mexico’s last Republican senator, is trying to defeat Democratic Sen. Martin Heinrich, who is running for a third six-year term in November as her party looks to works to win back the House. majority.

“Trump is definitely going to help us with the independents,” Domenici predicted in a Fox News Digital interview on the eve of the former president’s visit to the state.

With five days left until Election Day next Tuesday, the former president is making a rare detour from his campaign to the seven crucial battleground states in the battle for the White House that will likely determine whether Trump or Vice President Kamala Harris wins the 2024 election.

It’s been 20 years since a Republican won New Mexico in the presidential election. You have to go back to President George W. Bush’s re-election in 2004.

There haven’t been many polls in New Mexico, but most recent surveys show Harris with a single-digit lead over Trump, although one survey shows more competition for the state’s five electoral votes.

With time being such a precious commodity for presidential campaigns and the clock ticking quickly toward Election Day, Democrats in New Mexico say Trump’s trip to the state — his first in five years — is a fool’s errand.

“Trump is wasting his time coming to our state as polls show New Mexicans will once again reject his MAGA extremism and divisive rhetoric,” Daniel Garcia, spokesman for the Democratic Party of New Mexico, claimed in a statement.

And referencing the former president’s Oct. 31 stop in Albuquerque, Garcia made a verbal attack on Trump, saying, “There will be a round orange mass in Albuquerque on Halloween, and we’re not talking about a pumpkin.”

But Domenici, who is trying to narrow the gap with Heinrich, sees advantages to Trump’s stop at the airport in Albuquerque, the state’s largest city.

“People are very excited that Trump is coming here,” she told Fox News. “It definitely really excites the grassroots and the grassroots is kind of a growing term.”

Domenici argued that “we have so many problems in our state that people end up saying, ‘I’m giving up on Democrats and I want to become a Republican,’ and that’s happening every day, every week in this race.

The legacy of her father, who died in 2017, gives the younger Domenici a powerful political brand and a lot of name recognition in New Mexico.

“My family’s name has definitely helped me a lot. That’s because my father’s legacy is so deeply appreciated here by multiple generations,” she emphasized. “Many people still have a warm affection for him.”
