ForbesToday’s ‘Wordle’ #1229 Hints, clues and answers for Wednesday, October 30

It’s not just the last day of the month, it’s Halloween. Happy Halloween, you wonderful Wordsmiths! I hope you do something fun. I dress up as The Dude The Great Lebowski. I’ll probably just sit and pass out candy and have coffee by the fire. That sounds pretty nice. The children will be busy with their friends and the tricks they perform. My daughter is 17 this year and a senior in high school, so this is kind of a big Halloween for us—in theory, her last before she leaves the nest. Gulp.

Yesterday was Wordle Wednesday and this was the riddle I gave you:

I can start or end a war. I can give you the power of heroes or leave you powerless. One look may ensnare me, but no force can compel me to stay. What am I?

Kudos to those of you who solved it. The answer is Love.

Let’s solve this Wordle!

How to Solve Today’s Wordle

The tip: Foreign.

The clue: This Wordle has two vowels in a row and two consonants in a row.

Can you solve today’s sentence?

SHALE was a bad opening bet today, despite normally being a pretty good bet. One yellow box and (I would later learn) 405 remaining solutions! Ouch! I went with TRIED for my second guess, and this was definitely as perfect as you could get without guessing the Wordle. Only one possible word remained: WEIRD for the win! Huzzah!

Competitive Wordle Score

I get 1 point for guessing three points and another point for beating the Wordle Bot, which made four attempts today. 2 points for me! Fuck off, Wordle Bot! Ha! I am the king of the world!

How to Play Competitive Wordle

  • Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
  • If you beat your opponent, you get 1 point. In case of a draw you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or play for a new score every day.
  • Friday is 2XP, which means you double your points: positive or negative.
  • You can keep a running tally or just play day by day. Enjoy!

Contemporary Wordle Etymology

Today’s etymology in the form of a Halloween rhyme:

In times of old, in dreaded stories,

A word emerged: the old foreign.

From Old English wide, a doomed thread,

The power to shape what awaits us.

Three sisters spun, in myth and lore,

Fate, the Norns, of old.

They wove strange paths, unseen, obscure,

And from their craft, foreign the seer.

Once fate-bound, predestined, threads entwined,

But Shakespeare’s witches redefined:

The word became eerie, strange and dark,

A terrifying chill, a ghostly sign.

So now on nights full of ghosts and spirits,

We say “how strange”, and make a toast,

To strange shadows and untold stories,

The strange, bizarre and foreign unfold.
