An umbrella may be the best Halloween costume accessory Thursday in Indianapolis after the National Weather Service’s latest forecast — at least in the afternoon. Thursday evening the local meteorologist says you may not need it.

Forecasters in Central Indiana are predicting showers and possible thunderstorms beginning Thursday in the mid to late afternoon. Rain amounts of up to an inch are possible, according to NWS. While the ground in the Indy metro area may be soaked, meteorologists say trick-or-treaters could be spared a drench.

“We expect the rain to taper off and move away during those trick-or-treating hours,” said Jason Puma, a meteorologist with NWS. “So right now we’re looking at a 60% chance of rain early Thursday evening.”

In addition to rain, Puma warned Hoosiers Thursday evening to be aware of possible wind gusts up to 25 miles per hour — something to keep in mind if your Halloween costume includes wings or other fragile elements.
