Health inspectors find human waste and drugs at Lakemill Lodge, leading to evacuation

A local motel was closed after health inspectors discovered hazardous conditions on the premises, including human waste and controlled substances.

The Northern Nevada Public Health District (NNPH) and the City of Reno conducted a joint inspection of the Lakemill Lodge as part of an ongoing investigation into code violations. Inspectors found human waste in the stairwells and common areas, as well as used syringes.

Tests showed the syringes had positive results for fentanyl, methamphetamine and heroin. Due to the dangerous conditions, NNPH was forced to close the motel’s stairwells and common areas.

Because the stairwells are the main exits from the building, all residents were evacuated and the motel was closed until further notice. The facility will remain closed until repairs are completed and officials determine it is safe to reopen.

Officials and community partners are working to move residents of Lakemill Lodge into temporary housing while the motel is remediated.
