Wawa cups recalled because metal straws cause cuts

A recall was issued for approximately 60,000 Wawa brand beverage cups after multiple injuries were reported from the products’ metal straws.

A notice from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warned Thursday that the metal straw in the cup “could cut your mouth and/or fingers, posing a risk of lacerations.”

Four injuries to the hand and mouth have been reported so far.

The Commission urges consumers to immediately stop using the metal straws and contact Illinois-based Halo Branding Solutions, the distributor of the cups, for a silicone replacement. If a customer also wants to return the cup, he or she can receive a $15 refund in the form of a gift card.

Affected consumers should not attempt to return the cups to Wawa stores, Thursday’s notice said. More information about how to participate can be found on the Halo website.

The recalled cups were sold exclusively at Wawa stores in Alabama, Washington, DC, Delaware, Florida, North Carolina, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Maryland in August of this year. The 24-ounce drinkware was available in four different styles.

Pennsylvania-based Wawa claimed the cups had not been recalled to stores by Halo since mid-August, noting that more than 5,400 units had been sold.
