One dead, two injured in shooting at Vancouver Mall, suspect not yet known, police say

One person was killed and two others were injured in a shooting at Vancouver Mall on Thursday evening. The shooter was still on the run, Vancouver police said.

Kim Kapp, spokesperson for Vancouver police, said the first 911 calls came in around 7:30 p.m. Callers reported that one person shot another person in the food court and fired multiple times, with the bullets hitting two other people.

The injured were taken to hospital. Kapp said their circumstances were unknown at this time.

When officers arrived, they found the dead and injured people in the food court.

Kapp said detectives were reviewing video footage taken at the mall to identify the suspect or suspects.

She said it was not known what motivated the shooter or whether that person was targeting anyone. She said police believe the person is still armed.

Kapp said there was no longer an active threat at the mall and officers were clearing it as of 10 p.m. She said they were about halfway through and probably wouldn’t be done clearing the mall for another hour.

When the shooting happened, she said people in the mall were sheltering in place, which was the right thing to do.

The shooting happened on Halloween night, and Brianne Stoner was trick-or-treating at the mall with family when the shooting occurred. She, her family and some friends were taking a break near Euphoria Body Piercing & Tattoo when she said they heard five or six shots.

“I froze for a moment and thought, ‘That’s impossible. No way,'” Stoner said.

She said several people ran toward them.

“Many terrified mothers were pulling their children away, and all I could think was, ‘We have to run now, because I don’t know where they are, they haven’t seen us yet, we have to get away, we have to hide.’”

They ran to a nearby apartment complex and called family to tell them everything was okay.

Vladdy Mrushenko was with friends when they heard the shots while eating in a Panda Express. He said he was so scared that he jumped from the second floor to the first to escape.

“I had too much adrenaline in me. My heart was beating like crazy. I thought, ‘F this, I’m jumping,'” he said.

Police said there is a reunion area outside Hobby Lobby for those who were separated from others. Anyone still inside the mall was able to exit through any open exit, police said.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Vancouver Police Department tip line at 360-487-7399.
