Everything you need to know about this year’s race

The world’s largest marathon returns to the Big Apple, and the 53rd edition of the 42.2-mile ride through New York City’s five boroughs will be the largest ever.

More than 50,000 runners will run the TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday, with millions more expected to watch on television.

American runners try to break a drought by crossing the finish line first. It has been fifteen years since Meb Keflezighi won the men’s race in 2009. Shalane Flanagan was the last American woman to win the New York Marathon in 2017.

Three of the four professional winners from last year’s race will be back to try to defend their crowns. Tamirat Tola, the men’s professional winner, and Kenya’s Hellen Obiri, the women’s winner, are back. Marcel Hug is going for his fourth straight win in the men’s wheelchair division at the NYC Marathon and his seventh win overall.

Women’s wheelchair defender Catherine Debrunner, who won five Paralympic gold medals in Paris and captured the title at the Chicago Marathon last month, will not participate.
