Apple buys one of the best non-Adobe image editors, Pixelmator

Pixelmator, the Lithuania-based company that makes popular Mac-based photo editing tools, has agreed to be acquired by Apple.

The company says that, pending regulatory approval, “there will be no material changes to the Pixelmator Pro, Pixelmator for iOS, and Photomator apps at this time,” but that “stay tuned for upcoming exciting updates .” The Pixelmator team, now 17 years old, states that its staff will join Apple. Details about the acquisition price have not been made public.

Fans of Pixelmator’s apps, which are mainly one-time purchases unlike Adobe’s tools, may be hoping that these “exciting updates” won’t include the sublimation of Pixelmator into an Apple product at a later date, while the Pixelmator apps disappear.

Regulatory approval should not be a rubber stamp. Adobe was forced to halt its proposed $20 billion acquisition of design software company Figma after regulators from the United Kingdom and the European Union expressed opposition to the deal and launched investigations. Similar objections emerged from Europe following Amazon’s attempt to buy iRobot, while Microsoft’s biggest ever acquisition, the $69 billion purchase of Activision Blizzard, found a way out.
