Regional girls volleyball matches are wrapping up as the season comes to a close

The end has finally arrived: the conclusion of the girls volleyball regular season.

The final matches will be completed this weekend, ahead of the regional tournaments the following weekend.
That sets up the state tournament for Nov. 14-16 at the Denver Coliseum.

For the most part, the league championships have been decided. After the regular season ends Saturday, the regional games will be determined.

Here’s a look back at the final week of the regular season:

Class 5A

While it may not have won the Continental League crown, no team will want to match up with Legend in the regional tournament. The No. 5 Titans (14-4, 9-1) closed the regular season by defeating a pair of top-five teams in then-No. 5 Rock Canyon and fourth-ranked Mountain Vista on Tuesday night. Legend is currently second in RPI behind national champion Chaparral… The Granite Peaks League has three teams in the top 16 in RPI, with national champion Niwot (10th), Erie (11th) and a Broomfield team with 18 wins (16th). … Pine Creek has picked a good time to get warm. The seventh-ranked Eagles (19-3, 10-1 Colo. Springs Metro) finished the regular season with 13 straight wins and shared the league crown with No. 8 Pueblo West. …No. 9 Denver South captured the City League crown with a sweep of Denver East on Tuesday night. The Ravens (18-1, 6-0) haven’t lost a game since Aug. 31.

Game of the (last) week: Legend final Rock Canyon, 3-2 (25-22, 13-25, 22-25, 25-12, 15-11)

Class 4A

Top-ranked Thompson Valley can take the lead in the Longs Peak League with a win over Mountain View on Wednesday. The Eagles (17-0, 14-0) edged past No. 9 Timnath on Tuesday night. … Fourth-ranked Montrose (14-5, 8-2 at Southwestern) defeated another top-10 University team in four sets Friday night before falling to 3A’s current No. 4 Village on Saturday. Maggie Legg had 15 kills and 13 digs in the win over University… Lewis-Palmer got her revenge last Thursday at Pikes Peak by rolling past Cheyenne Mountain in four sets to clinch the league crown. Brooke Gennerman had 26 kills and 10 digs for the No. 2 Rangers (15-4, 9-1). …No. No. 7 Battle Mountain (18-0, 12-0 Western Slope) still has a shot at an undefeated season, although the Huskies are in a tournament with No. 3 Palisade this weekend.

Game of the (last) week: Lewis Palmer def. Cheyenne Berg, 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-23)

Class 3A

An unknown for some 3A squads heading into the postseason is how the No. 4 Village will perish. The Mountaineers (20-3) look to be a tough task, especially after heading to the Western Slope last weekend and picking up wins over a pair of 4A top-5 teams in Palisade and Montrose. Lilian Edwards has 26 kills in the win over No. 3 Bulldogs. … Eaton got back on track after its first loss and finished second in the Patriot League with a four-set win over Resurrection Christian last Thursday. The No. 2 Reds were followed by 16 kills from Chloe Crider. …No. 7 Lamar took home the Tri-Peaks crown. The Thunder are 20-2 overall entering their final on Thursday.

Game of the (last) week: Eaton for sure. Resurrection Christian, 3-1 (25-22, 19-25, 25-17, 25-23)

Class 2A

Sedgwick County is gearing up for a state run by taking on some of the top 2As in this stretch. The No. 2 Cougars defeated No. 10 Heritage Christian in four sets on Tuesday night ahead of a showdown with top-ranked Simla on Saturday. …No. 3 Lyons has won 10 in a row in the last weekend of play. The Lions (17-2, 11-1 Mile High) finished second in league play against 1A Flatirons Academy. …No. 6 Swink avenged a loss to Fowler earlier this year with a four-set victory on Tuesday evening. The Lions (19-4, 7-1 Santa Fe) hold the league tiebreaker over No. 8 Rye. …

Game of the (last) week: Sedgwick County beats. Heritage Christian, 3-1 (25-18, 25-13, 24-26, 25-19)

Class 1A

Merino is a heavy favorite entering the postseason, although the Rams still have a regular season remaining. The top-ranked Rams (19-1, 7-0 Lower Platte) defeated a top-five team in Stratton last Saturday and were scheduled to face No. 2 Fleming on Tuesday night. … Fleming had then-No. 2 Idalia in three sets last Thursday before falling to 2A’s top-ranked Simla. The Wildcats then downed No. 8 Cheraw.

Game of the (last) week: Stratton def. Eads, 3-2 (25-21, 25-11, 23-25, 22-25, 15-10)
