Mikel Arteta opens up his attempt to keep emotions in check ahead of Newcastle return | Arsenal

Mikel Arteta believes he has learned from Arsenal’s controversial defeat to Newcastle last season and is trying to keep his emotions in check as he does not want to be banished from the dugout.

Arteta was cleared of making insulting comments about match officials after Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat at St James’ Park last year after VAR failed to recommend ruling out Anthony Gordon’s winning goal. The Spaniard is one of five managers in the Premier League not to have received a yellow card this season as his side prepared for Newcastle’s early kick-off.

Arteta, who is hopeful Gabriel Magalhães could be fit but has doubts about Ben White due to a joint problem, said he had made a conscious effort not to overstep the mark.

“I don’t want to miss a single match, that’s for sure,” he said. “I can’t promise you that if we score a goal, I won’t be jumping up and down on the touchline. I can’t guarantee that. Hopefully they (the match officials) have also adapted and understood that emotions are a big part of it. I can’t control myself in the standings and so far it has worked.”

Asked if he was meditating to help deal with less favorable decisions, Arteta said: “On the touchline I’m not yet at the point where I’m in meditation mode, but maybe it’s something that needs to happen! I just want the best for the team and I want to give the team the best chance to be as competitive as possible, to win the majority of football matches. When they changed the rules and certain behaviors on the sidelines, we have to adapt and evolve accordingly. That’s what I’m trying to do.”

The New Zealand rugby team was at Arsenal’s training ground on Wednesday to prepare for their meeting with England on Saturday, although Arteta was unable to spend time with their head coach, Scott Robertson, who he described as “an inspiration”, due to their trip to Preston in the Carabao Cup. Arteta recommended reading the book Legacy: What the All Blacks Can Teach Us about the Business of Life, which formed the basis of his approach as a manager.

Asked what specific ideas he had embraced, Arteta replied: “A few. It is mainly about culture and the importance of clarity, or what it means when you put on a sweater. The feeling of belonging somewhere. If someone plays with that feeling, I think it increases their involvement, increases their ability to perform in a different way and influence the organization.”
