Fetterman calls Trump support in Pennsylvania ‘astonishing’: ‘You see the intensity’

Democratic Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania opened up about the state of the presidential race in his key state, calling former President Trump’s support there “amazing” while predicting that Elon Musk’s support will “really matter.”

“There’s a difference between not understanding it, but also recognizing that it exists,” Fetterman says told the New York Times in an interview published Saturday morning when asked about enthusiasm for Trump in Pennsylvania. “And anyone who spends time driving around, and you can see the intensity. It’s amazing.”

Fetterman continued, “I was doing an event in Indiana County. Very red. And there was a superstore with Trump stuff, and it was a hundred feet long. (There were) dozens of T-shirts and hats and bumper stickers and all kinds, I mean, it’s like, where did this all come from? It is something that has taken on a life of its own. And it’s like something very special exists. And that doesn’t mean I admire it. It’s just… it’s real.”

Fetterman said he believes Musk, who endorsed Trump and appeared with him at a rally at the site of Trump’s first assassination attempt in Butler, will appeal to Pennsylvania voters.

“And now Elon Musk is joining him,” Fetterman said. “I mean, for a lot of people, that’s Tony Stark. That’s the richest man in the world. And he’s clearly, and undeniably, a brilliant man, and he says, Hey, that’s my guy as president. That really matters doing.”

Fetterman said he was “alarmed” when Musk showed up on the campaign trail for Trump, saying he was in “some sense” a “bigger star than Trump.”

“Recommendations are often not really meaningful, but this one is, I think,” Fetterman said. “That worries me.”

Fetterman told the New York Times that he does not believe the 2024 election will come down to “a particular policy,” but instead the “stark choice” between Harris and Trump.

“It’s deeply ingrained,” Fetterman said. “And that’s why the people who haven’t decided yet are asking, what do I want for the next four years? And I believe plenty of people will choose Harris. But it’s going to be a lot… a lot closer than anyone would like. ”
