Brazilian Grand Prix 2024 – Qualifying F1 Results (Interlagos)

Here are the full results from the rearranged qualifying session for the Brazilian Grand Prix at the iconic (and very wet!) Interlagos circuit.

Lando Norris took pole position in very chaotic conditions as heavy and persistent rain fell on the track all morning in São Paulo.

Fernando Alonso and Alex Albon caused a hugely disrupted qualifying session when they both crashed at Interlagos. With Stroll’s car also wrecked in Q2, only seven drivers remained on track to survive the final few timed laps.

Norris, who was on provisional pole between session breaks, saw further improvement in both of his final runs to take the P1 spot by 0.173 seconds with George Russell in second.

Tsunoda, Ocon and Lawson all put in incredible laps to complete the top five, followed by Leclerc, Albon and Piastri.

Another qualifying session, more red flags.

The first was Carlos Sainz who, like Colapinto in Q1, lost his car as he made his way through the Senna esses. It resulted in another session break, just as the drivers started to switch from the full wets to the intermediates.

Sainz’s crash brought a hectic five-minute end to Q2, with one of the big names, Charles Leclerc, struggling to make an impression at the top of the timesheet.

And then, with just over two minutes to go, Stroll became the next victim of the Senna-esses, prompting the stewards to raise another red flag.

That spelled disaster for Red Bull, as both Max Verstappen, who already had to serve a five-place grid penalty, and Sergio Perez were eliminated in Q2 alongside Sainz, Gasly and Bottas; the latter is just 0.008 seconds away from reaching Q3.

1 Lando Norris McLaren 1:24.844 22 laps

F1 Results: Brazilian Grand Prix – Q1

At 7:30 a.m. local time on a Sunday morning, there was a long line of F1 drivers desperate to get onto the track after Saturday’s qualifying session was completely rained out.

Wet conditions, a newly constructed track and cold morning temperatures gave this session the perfect ingredients for yellow and red flags.

And after a few minor yellow flag incidents, the session was stopped completely halfway through Q1 when Franco lost Colapinto in the wall at the exit of the Senna esses. That red flag put his teammate Alex Albon, plus George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, in grave danger of being eliminated from Q1 as the rain continued to fall.

Fortunately, the repair work that saw Colapinto go into the wall went completely quickly, allowing a hectic Q1 session to resume.

Russell got himself out of trouble, but Hamilton had a harder time climbing out of the Q1 elimination zone. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen had a lap time deleted, leaving him hovering just above the drop zone.

Verstappen would go on to set the fastest time of the Q1 session with his final effort, but it was a disaster for Hamilton, who failed to get out of Q1 in conditions he has thoroughly loved over the course of his established career.

“This damn car, man,” he complained after being told he would line up P16 on the Brazilian Grand Prix grid.
