NASCAR Cup Series’ Championship Four comes after the Martinsville race ends in controversy

The NASCAR Cup Series Championship Four was set in stone Sunday night after Ryan Blaney won the Xfinity 500 at Martinsville Speedway.

Blaney, the defending NASCAR Cup Series champion, held off Chase Elliott and Kyle Larson for the win. Each driver needed a win to get into the Championship Four. But it was car No. 12 that crossed the start-finish line first.

Blaney was elated as he banged on the hood of his Ford in celebration.

“I tried to save my rear tires early. I had trouble with my rear tires. I think it paid off for us,” Blaney told NBC Sports after the race. “I am so proud of the efforts of the group of twelve that they never gave up. It is really special to have another chance at a championship.”

Christopher Bell thought he secured the last spot. He passed Bubba Wallace and hit the wall on the final turn, but secured 18th place and the point he needed to get past William Byron and earn the final spot.

However, NASCAR officials were reviewing the end of the race while Bell was investigated to see if he made a similar move as Ross Chastain did to win Martinsville in 2022. The so-called “Hail Melon” ride catapulted Chastain into the Championship Four. But NASCAR banned the move.

Bell appeared to get loose and hit the wall, but he continued to ride along the wall for a few yards before coming off and ending the race. Byron said that whether Bell meant it or not, he hit the wall.

NASCAR PLAYOFF RANKINGS: CAN TYLER REDDICK WIN IT ALL FOR MICHAEL JORDAN?

NASCAR officials determined Bell violated safety rules and Byron was awarded the final spot in the Championship Four.

Bell was left stunned.

Blaney and Byron will now join Joey Logano and Tyler Reddick at Phoenix International Raceway for a shot at a title.

Logano became the first driver to clinch a spot in the Championship Four when he won in Las Vegas. No pressure was needed in the last few races to determine that last place.

Reddick will be part of the Championship Four for the first time. He came from third place to first in the final moments at Homestead-Miami to win and clinch a spot in the finals.
