Jeremy Swayman comes up big for the Bruins in the first shutout of the season

BOSTON – Jeremy Swayman earned his first shutout of the season as the Bruins blanked the Seattle Kraken at TD Garden on Saturday night.

After getting off just 10 shots in the first 40 minutes of the match, Swayman was forced to take a big lead for the Bruins when the Kraken pushed back in the third and bombarded him with 13 shots in the final frame.

“It’s just finding your flow,” Swayman said. “I know what I have to do to stay in the moment and hold it step by step.”

Not only was Swayman flawless in net, but the skaters in front of him blocked 27 Seattle shots, including 16 in the first two periods.

“The guys in front of me did a great job of clogging up the middle,” Swayman said. “And (they) showed me the first shot, so that was a really good team win.”

Swayman gave up six goals on 22 shots over a period and a half against the Carolina Hurricanes last Thursday night and was pulled just 30 minutes into the game.

Bouncing back from that performance and throwing back-to-back shutouts with fellow Bruins goalie Joonas Korpisalo was huge for Swayman and his teammates.

“That’s a huge boost for our team,” Swayman said. “It’s something I haven’t shared before (the back-to-back shutouts) with another goalie. Korpi, hats off to him for leading the way.”

The Bruins won their second game in a row for the second time this season. The first back-to-back win game as the Black and Gold defeated the Montreal Canadiens and Los Angeles Kings in the first week of the season.

“It’s just really special to see our team come together and not take ‘no’ for an answer,” Swayman said. “I think the way we attacked them early set the tone for the whole game.

“… It was a good feeling in the locker room to know that we are not playing at our level yet. There’s so much room for improvement, and I think our mentality at the moment is to make sure we do the best job we can every day, and it’s really great to see the boys being rewarded for that.”

The Bruins will look to build on the wins and extend their streak to three games on Tuesday night in Toronto when they take on the Maple Leafs.

“I think the way our defense clogged the middle and made it so if they wanted to get a Grade A (chance), they had to work for it,” Swayman said. “You saw the blocked shots tonight, the effort the guys put in, and I think the offense had a lot of close calls as well. Once again, there is a lot to build on, but there is still a lot to work on, and that is our mindset going forward.”
