US sends B-52 Stratofortress bomber to Middle East as Iran threatens

B-52 Stratofortress strategic bombers have arrived in the Middle East after being deployed by the US, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced late Saturday evening in an X/Twitter post.

According to the post, the B-52 bombers arrived in CENTCOM’s area of responsibility, which includes the Middle East region, and were dispatched from Minot Air Force Base’s 5th Bomb Wing.

The B-52 Stratofortress is a long-range heavy bomber that can perform various missions, according to the US Air Force.

In addition, the U.S. Air Force said the B-52 is capable of flying at “high subsonic speeds” and can “carry nuclear or precision-guided conventional munitions with global precision navigation capabilities.”

“In a conventional conflict, the B-52 can conduct strategic strikes, close air support, air interdiction, offensive counter-air and maritime operations,” the U.S. Air Force added.

The timing of the arrival of B-52 bombers in the region comes as Israel prepares for an expected Iranian attack in response to last week’s Israeli attack on missile production facilities in the Islamic Republic.

Iran vows ‘crushing response’

Iranian Supreme Leader Sayyid Ali Khamenei promised a “crushing response” to the US and Israel in a Saturday evening X post for “what they are doing against #Iran and the #ResistanceFront.”

The arrival of the B-52 bombers came after the US said on Friday it would deploy B-52 bombers, fighter jets, tanker aircraft, ballistic missile defense destroyers and naval destroyers in the Middle East.

The Pentagon said Friday that the deployment would take place in the coming months.

“Should Iran, its partners, or its allies use this moment to attack U.S. personnel or interests in the region, the United States will take all necessary actions to defend our people,” said Pentagon Air Force spokesman Gen. Maj. Patrick Ryder, in a statement.

How does the B-52 Stratofortress work?

According to the U.S. Air Force, the B-52s can be equipped with electro-optical vision sensors to improve targeting and combat capabilities.

Pilots flying the bombers wear night vision goggles during night operations. Additionally, the B-52s are reportedly effective for ocean surveillance and have the ability to monitor “140,000 square miles (364,000 square kilometers) of the ocean’s surface,” the U.S. Air Force noted.

During Desert Storm, B-52s delivered 40 percent of all weapons dropped by coalition forces, the U.S. Air Force added.
