Will Ohio count early votes first on November 5?

Voters may not know the winner of the presidential race on election night, but they do know where Ohio stands.

County election boards may get a head start on early and absentee voting, which will speed up Tuesday’s count. Key battleground states like Wisconsin don’t let election officials process absentee ballots before Election Day.

Here’s how Ohio will count and report results.

When will Ohio count early absentee ballots?

Boards of elections could begin processing and scanning absentee ballots on Oct. 8, the first day of early in-person voting. They can’t count the ballots until after the polls close at 7:30 PM on Tuesday.

Under a directive from Secretary of State Frank LaRose, election officials must upload their first set of absentee results by 8 p.m.

Where can I watch the election results on Tuesday, November 5?

Once polls close, Ohioans can track unofficial election results on this newspaper’s website.

Local governments must update their figures every half hour or hour, depending on the province, until all districts have reported results.

Will any ballots be counted in Ohio after election night?

Election officials will count outstanding absentee and provisional ballots they receive by Nov. 9. Absentee ballots returned by mail must be postmarked by Monday to be counted.

What are unofficial election results?

All election results are unofficial until boards complete their official investigations. They can begin that process on Nov. 11 and must submit certified results to LaRose’s office by Nov. 20 at 2 p.m.
