Cincinnati Bengals: 3 Positions to Focus on at the NFL Trade Deadline

The Cincinnati Bengals (4-5) are inching closer to contention despite some glaring holes in the team.

With Joe Burrow coming off a career season and Tee Higgins possibly coming to an end, now is the time to make a move.

So, what are the positions the Bengals need to improve the most?

Defensive line

Cincinnati needs another pass rusher opposite Trey Hendrickson as well as someone who can generate pressure from the middle of the line. Oh, and it would be nice to be able to stop the flight too.

Adding to the need for more d-line help, BJ Hill left Sunday’s game with a rib injury and was quickly ruled out. It is the second time this season that he has been injured.

New York Giants edge rusher Azeez Ojulari is a potential option, as are Carolina Panthers edges Jadeveon Clowney and Chase Young of the New Orleans Saints.

Defensive tackles that could make sense include Sebastian Joseph-Day of the Tennessee Titans and Dalvin Tomlinson of the Cleveland Browns.

Cornerback

The Bengals currently don’t have a shutdown corner. Adding one before the deadline is a must if they want to keep up with the top QBs in the postseason. This position simply doesn’t have enough firepower after Dax Hill’s season-ending injury. But even with Hill, the secondary was rarely on par with the competition.

A potential target could be Las Vegas Raiders cornerback Jack Jones, who picked off Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow and led him to the house in Week 9.

Other possible options include Panthers corner Jaycee Horn, Tre’Davious White of the Los Angeles Rams and Marshon Lattimore of the Saints.

Run back

Chase Brown had a great game against the Raiders. But he was also the only non-QB to run the ball. That is not sustainable.

The Bengals could use a running back to replace Zack Moss’ workload after he suffered a neck injury that could land him on IR. Another running back could also provide Burrow with protection in the passing game.

Some running backs who could be available include Travis Etienne of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson of the Miami Dolphins, and Miles Sanders of the Panthers.

One free agent the Bengals could look at is Boston Scott, who is now healthy and working out for teams.
