2024 Elections: Long Lines Expected on Last Day of Early Voting in Chicago Ahead of Election Day

CHICAGO (WLS) — It’s the last day of early voting ahead of Tuesday’s election and there were long lines again at the voting supersite in downtown Chicago.

The line around the corner Monday morning at the Loop Supersite was expected, which is why some new voters showed up an hour and a half before the doors even opened.

Two sisters from Puerto Rico who are voting for the first time were first in line Monday morning.

“It is very important to be heard and just say what we want at this moment,” said Valeria Alvarado Berrios.

And that’s a good thing, because thirty minutes after Valeria and Fabiola showed up at the Loop Supersite downtown, the line grew all the way to the next street.

“I’ve heard of people waiting in line for up to three hours or just to get into the building,” Valeria said.

Doctor Nia Heard-Garris is a pediatrician at Lurie Children’s Hospital and a professor at Feinberg’s School of Medicine.

They were more than willing to vote and even filled out practice ballots studying each individual candidate’s policies.

“We still did our duty, which is to ensure that every candidate is qualified,” Valeria said.

They hope that their peers will follow in their footsteps over the next 24 hours. As of last week, Chicago Gen Zers under the age of 25 and who are registered represented the smallest percentage of those who voted early, at just four percent, according to the Chicago Board of Elections.

“I’m afraid that whatever happens tomorrow and whoever wins could have an impact on how I feel safe here,” Fabiola said.

With both Kamala Harris and Donald Trump at a near standoff, feelings of unease remain.

Fabiola said she was “nervous” and Valeria said she was “very anxious.”

Those feelings of nervousness are something that many people say they feel.

The Supersite is open until 7 p.m
