Where and when should the ballot be returned in California?

play

More than 8 million ballots have been cast in California as of Monday, just one day before Election Day, the last chance Californians will have to vote for the next president as well as for congressional and local races. Those planning to vote on November 5 should make sure they return their ballot or get to the polls before they close.

Here’s what you need to know as the last day to vote approaches.

What time do polls open in California?

In California, polls open at 7 a.m.

What time do the polls close in California?

In California, polls close at 8 p.m., and if you are lining up to cast your vote at 8 p.m., know that you are allowed to do so as part of your right to vote.

How do I know if I am registered to vote?

One of the California Voter Bill of Rights includes the right to vote if you are a registered voter in California. According to the California Secretary of State, you are eligible to vote if:

  • You are a US citizen living in California
  • At least 18 years old
  • Registered where you currently live
  • Not currently serving a state or federal prison sentence for a crime
  • Currently not found mentally incompetent to vote by a court of law

So how do you know that you are registered to vote? You can go to voterstatus.sos.ca.gov to check this. One indication that you are registered to vote is that all active, registered voters in California received a ballot in the mail in October. But if you’re not registered to vote, you can still vote in California through the Same Day Voter Registration process, which allows people to cast their provisional ballot at their county election office, polling place or voting center.

You can find a list of places near you where you can complete the same-day voter registration process at caearlyvoting.sos.ca.gov.

Can I drop off my ballot on Election Day?

According to the Secretary of State’s office, you can drop off your mail-in ballot on Election Day at any polling place in California and at any drop-off location or ballot drop box in the state. You can also drop it off at your county elections official’s office. Your ballot must be received before the polls close at 8 p.m. Information about polling places in California can be found at sos.ca.gov/elections/polling-place.

When is the last day I can mail in my ballot?

If you are returning your ballot by mail, make sure your ballot is postmarked no later than Election Day, November 5. These ballots must be received by your province’s election office before November 12.
