Douglas County officials are planning Election Day security

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – Just one day away from Election Day and safety at the polls is paramount.

The Douglas County Election Commission says physical safety has always been a top priority for them. That’s why they have worked closely with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department on many elections.

They have worked closely with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department on many elections.

Members of the sheriff’s department will be at the commission office Monday and Tuesday as ballots are sorted and counted. The department also helps with traffic control Tuesday evening.

“Voters need to know that there has been a lot of effort by many agencies coming together to work together for this election to ensure the safety of not only the public, but also our poll workers and poll workers,” said Election Commissioner Brian Kruse.

VOTER INFORMATION

In recent years, the office has upgraded its camera system. There are cameras almost everywhere inside and outside, even in the break room.

If you encounter an emergency while voting, Kruse says to always call 911. Survey workers also have an emergency number they can call.

For incidents that do not require immediate attention but you would still like to report, please call the office at 402-444-VOTE.

Officials have also encouraged early voters to use ballot drop boxes:

On Monday, Secretary of State Bob Evnen’s office projected a 72% turnout across Nebraska in the 2024 general election, saying about 26% of registered voters in the state had already cast ballots.

Kruse said Monday morning that 135,000 early ballots have been mailed or cast in person so far in Douglas County, with estimates of more than 20,000 of that number accounting for in-person early voting. In 2020, about 14,000 voters cast their first ballot in person, he said.
