Jets trade Mike Williams to Steelers after criticism from Aaron Rodgers

The Jets succeed Mike Williams.

Weeks after quarterback Aaron Rodgers criticized the veteran receiver, the Jets traded Williams to the Steelers before the NFL trade deadline for a fifth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Rodgers was frustrated with Williams after the Oct. 14 loss to the Bills over a route he ran on the Jets’ final offensive play that led to an interception.

Williams’ fate was further sealed a day later when the Jets acquired Davante Adams, who has a long history with Rodgers, from the Raiders.

Williams, who signed a one-year, $10 million contract this offseason, was delayed at the start of the season as he recovered from a torn ACL.

Rodgers was live on the “Pat McAfee Show” when the transaction was first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

“Mike is a quiet guy and just goes about his business,” Rodgers said. “Mike had a serious injury last year, the ACL, which is difficult to come back from and he worked really hard in the off-season, not being at training camp much and working on the sidelines.

“But I felt like he got better at the beginning of the season. His speed kept improving and he felt more comfortable with it. That’s a serious injury. I had that injury and it’s the mental part of it. Mike is a good guy, he will be good in that locker room, with a lot of experienced leadership.”

Williams gives the 6-2 Steelers a much-needed boost at the position behind promising youngster George Pickens.

“Sometimes a change of scenery is great for certain guys,” Rodgers said. “It was great for me to get excited again and all that. We actually knew that with Davante’s arrival there would be fewer targets for everyone. G (Garrett Wilson) is going to get his goals, he’s leading the league in goals and Tae is a dynamic player, he’s going to get his goals. So if this gives Mike more opportunities, that’s great and we wish Mike the best.”

Williams, 30, finished his Jets career with 12 catches on 21 targets for 166 yards.

The Jets offense finally found a nice groove in Thursday’s 21-13 comeback win over the Texans, with Wilson and Adams combining to score the team’s three touchdowns.

The 3-6 Jets will take on the Cardinals on Sunday.
