play

New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers was live on ESPN’s “Pat McAfee Show” when news broke that his team had traded away one of its veteran receivers.

On Tuesday, New York sent wideout Mike Williams to the Pittsburgh Steelers for a fifth-round pick. The 30-year-old failed to build chemistry with his quarterback in the early parts of the season after signing with the Jets as a free agent.

During a Week 6 loss to the Buffalo Bills, Williams ran an incorrect route, leading to a Rodgers interception. After the game, the quarterback called the veteran receiver for the outcome of the play.

The Jets traded for receiver Davante Adams the next day, and Williams’ role in the offense was reduced even further.

On Tuesday’s program, Rodgers alluded to Adams’ arrival and Williams’ resulting drop in targets as the reason the Jets were ready to move on from an eighth-year receiver.

“Mike (Williams) is a quiet guy. He just goes about his own business. Mike had a serious injury last year – the ACL – which is difficult for him to come back from, and he worked his butt off all season. Was there for a while not. a lot of training camp; he worked on the side,” Rodgers said. But I felt like he got better at the beginning of the season. It felt like his speed got better and he felt more comfortable with it.

“Mike’s a good guy. He’ll be good in that locker room, obviously with a lot of great, experienced leadership. He’s had a great career. And sometimes a change of scenery is great for certain guys,” he continued. “For me it was great, it was nice to get excited again.

“We kind of knew that with Davante (Adams) coming in there would be less goals for everyone. G (Garrett Wilson) leads the league in goals, he’s going to get his goals, and Te (Adams) is a dynamic player , he is So if this gives Mike more opportunities, that’s great, and I wish Mike the best.”

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Steelers sent the Jets their 2025 fifth-round pick for the wideout on Tuesday. Pittsburgh was reportedly looking to add a receiver before the NFL trade deadline and made the move for Williams on Tuesday afternoon.

The trade news was confirmed by Tyler Dragon of USA TODAY Sports.
