North Jersey Cities and How They Voted in the Presidential Election

play

New Jersey is one of the most diverse states in the country, but it typically leans Democratic in presidential elections.

But look at North Jersey, with its rural farmlands and far western corner towns with just a handful of residents – look at Walpack – and the bustling cities to the east, with exploding populations in Newark and Paterson, and the diversity of the state. is grim. It is therefore not surprising that the political landscape is too.

NorthJersey.com analyzed years of presidential election data dating back to 2004, when the state’s city data became easily available online, but paid particular attention to the last two elections and how North Jersey residents voted.

In 2020, Democrat Joe Biden won the majority of votes in the Garden State, receiving 2.6 million votes, compared to Republican Donald Trump’s 1.9 million. In 2016, Democrat Hillary Clinton captured 2.2 million votes from New Jersey residents, while Trump received 1.6 million votes.

Bergen, Essex, Morris, Passaic and Sussex counties have overall chosen Democratic candidates, but not every unique county and city votes the same. In fact, Sussex County has firmly established itself as a Republican stronghold, with none of its 24 municipalities voting majority for the Democratic candidate in several presidential elections.

Some municipalities switched from Republican in 2016 to Democratic in 2020. Others remained strong on their political parties. As the November 5 election approaches, let’s take a look at the data below.

These North Jersey cities went from Republican to Democrat in the 2020 presidential election

Most North Jersey municipalities have consistently voted Republican or Democratic during the elections. Sussex County residents have consistently kept the county a Republican powerhouse, with every municipality voting for the Republican candidate in presidential elections since 2004, the first year the county and state released city-by-city results. The only anomaly? In 2008, there was a tie in Andover Borough, with 138 votes cast for each candidate: Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama in 2008.

While Sussex has been pretty consistent over the years – although Newton was close in 2020 – there were some North Jersey towns that were freaking out a bit.

In 2020, residents of Nutley Township in Essex County voted for the Democratic candidate at large (Biden), an exchange of the majority of votes for the Republican candidate in 2016 (Trump) and the majority of the township for the Democratic candidate in 2012 , when Republican Mitt Romney challenged Obama for commander in chief.

Residents of North Caldwell in Essex County also did a little flip-flopping. The majority of votes went for the Democratic candidate in 2020 – with 236 votes – and in 2016 and 2012 the votes went for the Republican candidate.

In Bergen County’s Mahwah, 53 more votes were cast for Biden over Trump in 2020, even though Trump was the majority choice in 2016, earning 1,188 more votes over Clinton. The Republican candidate received the most votes from Mahwah residents in 2012, defeating Obama.

In Passaic County, Hawthorne had a majority for Biden over Trump in 2020, but in 2016 he chose Trump over Clinton.

In Morris County, Rockaway Township, Rockaway Borough, Mount Olive, Mine Hill, Mendham Borough, Mendham Township and Denville were among the municipalities that voted blue in 2020 but cast the most votes for Trump in 2016.
