An instance of Project 2025 will be held during the Democratic National Convention, August 21, 2024, in Chicago. For a year, Project 2025 has endured as a persistent force in the presidential election. It is rare that a complex policy book of 900 pages has such a dominant presence in a political campaign.

One phrase you’ve probably heard a lot this election cycle is “Project 2025.”

It refers to a controversial plan by the conservative Heritage Foundation to overhaul the US government. The 900-page document outlines a roadmap for reorganizing the federal government to advance a conservative agenda.

Democrats have repeatedly tried to tie Trump to the plan’s most controversial aspects, while Trump has tried to distance himself from it.

Although Trump has tried to deny a connection, there is plenty of overlap between Project 2025 and his agenda. It proposes mass deportations of millions of undocumented immigrants. That also applies to Trump.

Trump has called for cuts to federal agencies such as the Department of Education. Project 2025 calls for its abolition.

“He has expressed interest in taking over parts of it and in other parts he believes it is too extreme for the nature of his future potential administration, and we at the Heritage Foundation think that is sufficient,” said Sarah Parshall Perry, senior legal advisor. fellow at the Heritage Foundation, told NPR.

But there are also differences. On abortion, for example, Project 2025 goes further with restrictions than Trump has said he would go.

“If President Donald Trump is a successful candidate here and wins the general election, there are certain elements he would like to take over based on statements he has already made in the public context,” Perry said. “And there may be other parts he doesn’t want anything to do with.”
