Trump addresses his supporters as Harris’ path to victory narrows

Former President Donald Trump spoke to supporters early Wednesday morning at his election headquarters in West Palm Beach, Florida, declaring victory in the presidential race as votes continued to be counted in several key battleground states. CBS News has not yet made a projection in the presidential racebecause Trump currently does not have the electoral votes to win.

Trump was accompanied by his family and running mate Senator JD Vance.

“I want to thank the American people for the extraordinary honor of being elected your 47th and 45th presidents,” Trump said. “And for every citizen, I will fight for you, for your family and for your future. Every day I will fight for you with every breath in my body.”

Trump said America “has given us an unprecedented and powerful mandate,” noting that Republicans have taken back control of the Senate.

“This will truly be America’s golden age,” he said.

Trump said he will work to close the borders, though his remarks focused little on policy. He praised his campaign and surrogates, especially expressing gratitude to billionaire Elon Musk for his help in recent months.

“Under President Trump’s leadership, we will never stop fighting for you — for your dreams, for your children’s futures,” Vance said. “And after the greatest political comeback in American history, we are going to lead the greatest economic comeback in American history, led by Donald Trump.”

So far, CBS News expects Trump to win in North Carolina, Georgia and Pennsylvania. CBS News rates Wisconsin as Trump. He needs 270 electoral votes to win, and according to CBS News he currently has 266.

Harris was expected to celebrate election night at her alma mater, Howard University, but after midnight, Cedric Richmond, co-chair of Harris’ campaign, told the crowd that she will not speak to supporters tonight. Harris stayed at the vice president’s residence in Washington, DC

Trump’s supporters at his watch party in West Palm Beach were optimistic Tuesday night as the results rolled in, with Fox News in the background. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Senator Marco Rubio and North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum were among these supporters.

Trump has long cast doubt on the integrity of the election and its results. But he remained largely silent on social media on Tuesday evening as the results appeared to swing back in his favour.

Trump said that, after hundreds of rallies, this is the end of the campaign for him.

“I will never participate in a rally again, can you believe that?” he told his supporters.
