The National Weather Service meteorologist expects wetter, colder temperatures to come to Utah

A National Weather Service meteorologist said Utah is about to get colder and wetter.

“I’m as ready as I could ever be,” said Salt Lake City resident Sean Monson.

Meteorologist Hayden Mahan said Utah had a very warm October, but then flipped a switch. Now, in early November, Utah is seeing a much colder, more active weather pattern.

“We’re only about a week into snowpack building season, but so far it’s relatively normal snowpack. Relatively healthy,” Mahan said.

Mahan explained that with La Niña – a phase of the climate cycle – Utah could soon see colder and wetter conditions.

“We’re expected to continue to build that snowpack out there over the next few weeks, into December and January. It’s kind of up in the air as to what we can expect,” Mahan said.

After two consecutive years of above-average precipitation that benefited water reservoirs, Mahan said there is hope for another year of favorable conditions.

“If we can get near or above normal precipitation for the third year in a row across the state, that will really benefit our reservoirs. Our reservoirs are still very healthy,” Mahan said.

“For the good of the state and the health of the water situation, I would like to see more snow,” Monson added.

This is a good start to November, Mahan said. Tuesday’s storm should bring more snow to higher elevations.
