  • The Mountain Fire broke out in the Moorpark and Camarillo areas of Ventura County.
  • Flames, fanned by high winds, quickly spread to several homes.
  • According to the fire brigade, several people were taken to hospital with injuries.

A wildfire quickly grew to 10,400 acres Wednesday in the hills above Moorpark and Camarillo in Ventura County.

The Mountain Fire, which was reported around 9 a.m. along Highway 118 near Balcom Canyon and Bradley roads, resulted in several injuries and forced evacuations in communities northwest of Los Angeles. Evacuations were ordered as flames spread from the brush to several homes.

Fire officials said high winds in the area contributed to the challenging conditions. The fire crossed the 118 Freeway into the Camarillo Heights area and, fueled by strong wind gusts, appeared to break out in several locations.

In Malibu, a fire burned at least one coastal home near Pacific Coast Highway on Wednesday.

California’s latest wildfire update shows a staggering increase in the number of acres burned compared to last year. On Monday, Cal Fire reported that more than 1 million acres have burned since the start of the year. Last year, only 308,000 hectares had burned at this point.

The five-year average is 1.2 million hectares through November 4.
