TikTok is ordered to close offices in Canada ‘to protect national security’

After President Joe Biden signed legislation earlier this year requiring TikTok parent company ByteDance to divest the app or face a ban on U.S. app stores, Canada has moved to eliminate the company’s physical footprint there.

The Canadian government has ordered the social video service to close its two offices in the country, citing national security concerns raised by its presence there.

“We came to the conclusion that these activities carried out in Canada by TikTok and their offices would be detrimental to national security,” Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne told CBC News.

“I’m not at liberty to go into a lot of detail, but I know Canadians would understand if you said the Canadian government is taking steps to protect national security, that’s serious.”

Canadian users will still have access to the app, but the company’s physical presence in the region will end.

TikTok and its Chinese parent company ByteDance have faced criticism around the world, with Canada, Belgium and the European Union, the UK and the US banning their use on government phones.

Last year, the company was fined $368 million by European regulators for failing to protect children’s privacy.

Last month, a bipartisan group of 14 attorneys general filed a lawsuit against major TikTok, saying it misled the public about the safety of its platform and harmed the mental health of young people.
