Redick on why Russell didn’t play fourth down: ‘Level of Compete’

The Los Angeles Lakers fell to the Memphis Grizzlies 131-114 on Wednesday night as they tried to navigate a rather difficult wave of injuries. One man who is not injured, however, will start at guard D’Angelo Russell, although he saw his minutes reduced on Wednesday. Russell came out of the game with 5:54 left in the third quarter, did not reenter and played 21:33 on the night.

New Lakers coach JJ Redick decided to end the game with Gabe Vincent on the floor, and after the game he was asked why he kept Russell on the bench. As he explained, part of him just wanted to see what Vincent gave him, but with Russell there were some things he didn’t like to see.

“Level of competition, attention to detail, some things we’ve talked to him about for a few weeks and sometimes he’s really good at that, and other times it just falls back into certain habits,” Redick told the press after the game at 3 :05 in the video above. “It wasn’t a punishment, it just felt like we had a chance to win this game, that was the route we wanted to take. Gabe was fantastic in the first half, especially defensively, and I just wanted to see what that looked like.”

Russell went 4-for-12 from the field for 12 points, three assists and two steals before his night came to an end.
