ForbesToday’s ‘Wordle’ #1236 Hints, clues and answers for Wednesday, November 5

It’s Thor’s Day, and those of you who aren’t already hungover from this week’s big election are probably distracting yourselves with more fun things like games and puzzles. Wordle apparently. Anyway, yesterday I gave you a special challenge. Today I will reveal the answer.

This was yesterday’s puzzle:

Four animal people must cross a dangerous bridge at night. They only have one flashlight and the bridge is too dangerous to cross without a flashlight. The bridge can only hold two people at a time and each person walks at a different speed:

  • Mr. Fox takes 1 minute to cross.
  • Mrs. Alligator takes 2 minutes to cross.
  • Mister Orangutan takes 5 minutes to cross.
  • Mrs. Sloth takes 10 minutes to cross.

When two animals cross paths, they must move at the animal’s slower pace. The goal is for everyone to cross the bridge in 17 minutes or less. How do they do it?

The solution:

  • Mr. Fox and Mrs. Alligator cross first. This takes 2 minutes.
  • Mr. Fox returns. This takes 1 minute. 3 minutes have now passed.
  • Mr. Orangutan and Mrs. Sloth cross paths, it takes 10 minutes. 13 minutes have now passed.
  • Mrs. Alligator comes back and it lasts two minutes. 15 minutes have now passed.
  • Finally, Mr. Fox and Ms. Alligator cross paths, which lasts another two minutes a total of 17 minutes.

Now let’s solve this Wordle!

Word analysis

Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordles with Wordle Bot here.

For obvious reasons I suspected VOTER, and in the end I was very lucky. Only 3 words remained! EVICT, which also feels a bit current in its own weird way, left me with just one: EVENT for the win! Also somewhat appropriate. . . .

I get 1 point for guessing three points and 0 for tying the Bot.

Contemporary Wordle Etymology

The word event goes back to Latin origins. It comes from the Latin word eventmeaning ‘result, event or accident’, which in turn is derived from the verb evenlymeaning ‘to come out, happen or result’. Evenire itself is formed ex- (“out”) and venire (“come”).

The term traveled to Middle French as eventretaining the sense of something happening or taking place, especially as an outcome or result. In English, event took on its modern meaning towards the end of the 16th century and meant a notable event or occurrence, often with a sense of significance.
