Live updates: Trump wins the election, Harris admits

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei will hold a weekly press conference in Tehran on October 28, 2024.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry said on Thursday that every US election “provides opportunities for reviewing and reconsidering unjust and inappropriate approaches”, according to state news agency IRNA.

“Our people have had very bitter experiences with previous successive US administrations,” ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said, IRNA reported.

During his first term as president, Donald Trump has significantly increased pressure on Tehran, withdrawing from a 2015 deal to curb Iran’s nuclear activity and reimposing sanctions on the country.

Baghaei added that the American people “made their choice” by electing Trump, adding that what matters to the Iranians is Washington’s behavior in the future.

Other leaders: A number of other foreign representatives and heads of state responded to Trump’s victory on Wednesday, many offering congratulations.

Was among them Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoganwho expressed his congratulations by telephone on Thursday. During his last presidency, Trump called himself a “big fan” of Turkey’s strong leader.

Turkey is a strategically important NATO member due to its geographic location in both the Middle East and Europe, and is the alliance’s second largest military power.

Wednesday has the Secretary General of NATO Mark Rutte also said he looks forward to working with newly-elected President Donald Trump to counter threats from North Korea and Russia.

Rutte praised Trump’s success in encouraging other NATO member states to invest at least 2% of their gross domestic product (GDP) in defense.

Rutte said European leaders would discuss “dangerous new developments” in cooperation between China, Russia, Iran and North Korea on Wednesday, and that he looked forward to talking to Trump about those threats.
