ASU football and Arizona Cardinals icon Pat Tillman the subject of a new ESPN documentary

As Veterans Day approaches Monday, a new episode of ESPN’s “E60” remembers the fascinating life and tragic death of former Arizona Cardinals defenseman Pat Tillman, who died by friendly fire in Afghanistan 20 years ago.

“Pat Tillman: Life. Dead. Legacy” is a one-hour program with new reports and interviews detailing the story of one of the most famous soldiers in American history. Tillman turned down an NFL contract worth millions of dollars to enlist in the military after the September 11 terrorist attacks.

The episode airs Thursday evenings at 5 PM MST on ESPN and will then be available via streaming on ESPN+.

Directed by Frank Saraceno and William Weinbaum and produced by David Seronick, “Pat Tillman: Life. Dead. Legacy chronicles Tillman’s rise to the Arizona State and NFL gridiron and explains the role military leadership played in his death – and in keeping the truth secret from Tillman’s family and the rest of the world for weeks.

ESPN posted a story on the subject Thursday morning.

It also includes interviews with some of Tillman’s platoon mates who were there when he was killed on April 22, 2004, at the age of 27. It came two years after he left his football career to help fight the War on Terror.

According to the episode, many of those who were with Tillman when he died struggled for years with addiction, depression and thoughts of suicide, including Bryan O’Neal, who crossed the ridge behind Tillman on that fateful day.

“I probably thought this world would be a million times better if Pat had made it and I had died,” O’Neal said. “That was always my favorite survivor’s guilt trip.”

Tillman would have turned 48 on Wednesday.
