Mass Effect TV series is now officially in development at Amazon

Hey, remember that Mass Effect TV show we heard about in 2021… with no updates since? Well, we have good news: Amazon MGM Studios has finally officially started developing it.

Variety broke the news on Thursday, which also happens to be N7 Day, the annual celebration of all things Mass Effect. Somewhat strangely, despite the timing, it wasn’t officially announced on BioWare’s social channels, previously dampening expectations for N7 Day in the wake of the recent launch of Dragon Age: The Veilguard. But hey, it still means that Mass Effect fans have something to celebrate on this N7 Day.

IGN also confirmed the news to Amazon. Daniel Casey (10 Cloverfield Lane) will write and executive produce the series. Other producers include EA/BioWare’s Michael Gamble, who is leading development on the next Mass Effect game, and Avi Arad, who is also working on the upcoming live-action film The Legend of Zelda. Karim Zreik/Cedar Tree Productions are also producing under an overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios.

The Mass Effect TV series is now officially in development at Amazon.

We don’t know much about the series other than the names involved. Right now, the only plot detail Amazon is letting slip is the fact that it’s “based on EA’s best-selling sci-fi video game franchise,” so it’s still unknown whether it will be a simple adaptation or another story set. in the world of games.

As mentioned, the last we heard about the project in 2021 was that Amazon and EA were nearing a deal to adapt BioWare’s beloved RPG series. However, a lot has happened in the world of video game adaptations in the few years since.

Particularly on the Amazon side, Prime Video saw huge success earlier this year with the TV adaptation of Fallout, which racked up enough views and critical acclaim to be quickly picked up for a second season. Both Fallout and HBO’s The Last of Us received recognition at the most recent Primetime Emmys.

The news also comes as fans eagerly await updates on Mass Effect 5. Recently, Rolling Stone reported that BioWare’s “entire focus has shifted completely to the next Mass Effect” following the launch of Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Further details, including a release date, still seem far away.
