Vanoli uses history to motivate Torino against Juventus

Torino coach Paolo Vanoli used history to motivate his side ahead of tonight’s Derby della Mole against bitter rivals Juventus, but admits injuries forced them to do ‘something completely different’.

The match starts at 7:45 PM Dutch time at the Allianz Juventus Stadium.

You can follow all the build-up and action of this game, Cagliari-Milan and Venezia-Parma, on the Liveblog.

The Granata have not won the Turin Derby since a 2-1 home result in April 2015, recording just five draws and 15 defeats between Serie A and Coppa Italia.

Their last away win over Juventus was 2-1 in April 1995.

“It’s a fantastic atmosphere, a special match. We know what derbies are like and we have to control our emotions to give the best of ourselves on the pitch,” Vanoli told DAZN.

In an attempt to motivate the players, the coach showed them a video of Torino’s epic 3-2 win in March 1983, when they were 2-0 down and turned the situation around with three goals in four minutes.

“The 1983 derby was important to me because I wanted to show the players how to react to mistakes. They always need that courage. I just wanted to stay quiet and make sure the players heard the people around Toro, who know what the Granata shirt really means. The motivation for this competition comes naturally.”

Torino once topped the table after a very strong start to the Serie A season but have inevitably plummeted after losing Duvan Zapata for six months to a torn anterior cruciate ligament injury.

To make matters worse, Che Adams is also out tonight with a thigh strain, forcing Nikola Vlasic to step up in support of Tonny Sanabria.

“Of course we started the season with a group of attackers on which we based many of our movements, but the injury to Zapata and now Adams has changed everything,” Vanoli admitted.

“Vlasic and Sanabria have very different characteristics than those two and we have to serve them with very different mechanisms than the ones we have been working on all summer.”
