STATE COLLEGE − Penn State Football will show the college football world tonight the ins and outs of recovery and preparation for the College Football Playoffs.

The No. 7 Nittany Lions (7-1, 4-1 Big Ten) will try to subdue a steady, balanced but unspectacular Washington Huskies team that has barely won more than it has lost.

To do that, the Lions must use another deflating loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes to recalibrate and improve, especially on offense.

They have yet to host a White Out night at Beaver Stadium.

The stadium’s only official, fully participating White Out crowd should provide a boost of energy to their team heading into a four-match series in November in which they will be the decisive favourites.

Can Drew Allar and his fading wide receivers find success tonight against the nation’s No. 2 defense against the pass? Can Penn State’s highly regarded tailback pairing Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen find their early season routine again?

The PSU defense may also have its hands full. They should be successful if they can contain the Huskies’ most reliable producer, tailback Jonah Coleman. He is No. 17 nationally with 889 rushing yards (6.3 per carry).

Penn State’s drive to the expanded playoff resumes tonight. It must win its final four games to guarantee entry, including a possible opening-round match at Beaver Stadium.

This section will be updated when the game starts.

The Nittany Lions started the season strong on the ground behind junior tailbacks Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen. They ran through West Virginia, Bowling Green, Kent State and Illinois.

Then came injuries (Singleton) and tougher Big Ten competition.

The Lions have gone from averaging about 250 rushing yards per game in the first half of the season so far to just over 120 yards in the second half.

They haven’t had a 100-yard rusher since the Illinois game on September 28. Allen had 102 yards and Singleton added 94.

Now PSU must get back to winning ways against a run-prone Washington defense. The Huskies rank 74th nationally in rushing yards per game, yielding 151 yards per game.

Sixth-year senior Hakeem Beamon is no longer part of the program, team officials confirmed today, though they declined to give a reason.

The once promising lineman and former starter has seen his playing time gradually decrease this season. He produced just three tackles at 1.5 from scrimmage and ran fifth in the defensive tackle rotation.

His Penn State career ends with 40 tackles, four pass breakups and 10.5 tackles for loss in 45 games (18 starts).
