49 years later, Edmund Fitzgerald’s crew is remembered in a memorial ceremony

WHITEFISH POINT, Mich. (WLUC) – Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum annual exhibit Edmund Fitzgerald The commemoration ceremony will be offered as a livestream ceremony on Sunday evening.

The commemoration ceremony is closed to the public, but will be available via a livestream link. The Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum buildings at Whitefish Point are not open to the public on Sundays.

The ceremony will be streamed live on Facebook and YouTube at 7:00 PM ET. During the commemoration, the Fitzgerald’s bell will ring 29 times.

On November 10, 1975, the Fitzgerald and her entire crew of 29 were lost on Lake Superior. It sank 17 miles northwest of Whitefish Point. Whitefish Point is the location of the Whitefish Point Light Station and the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum.

The following year, Gordon Lightfoot released the hit song “Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” which documented the events that unfolded that evening in the lyrics.

The devastating shipwreck changed the way weather and conditions on Lake Superior are reported.
