‘Yellowstone’ Star Luke Grimes Admits ‘None of Us’ Saw Kevin Costner’s Departure Coming

With the final episodes of “Yellowstone” about to be released, Luke Grimes admits that the cast was left in the dark about Kevin Costner’s departure.

Grimes, who plays Kayce Dutton in “Yellowstone,” told Fox News Digital that the cast always thought they would finish the show without Costner’s character, John Dutton, but the way it played out, “none of us saw it coming.”

“I think we knew from the very beginning that at some point the end of the show would be without Kevin. That’s exactly where it went,” Grimes said.

“He was sick in season one, and you thought you were going to lose him. And you know, the story was always going to be this: once the patriarch is gone, once that big, powerful presence is gone – the kids have what is it going to take to keep this thing going?”

“None of us ever knew when that would happen or how. And so, you know, it happened in a way that I don’t think any of us, you know, saw coming. But we were all preparing for that on at some point. And, you know, whose character does what. And it was really fun to be on that journey with the audience,” he continued.

Grimes explained that he was “a little disappointed” that the cast of “Yellowstone” was unaware that Costner would not return to conclude the fifth season.

“I think I was probably a little disappointed that we didn’t know he wasn’t coming back,” he began. ‘I think there might have been a better farewell if we had done it in a different way. It was, you know, it was more of a surprise than anything.”

“But like I said, that’s above my pay grade. And our job is to just show up and do what’s on the page and do it the best we can,” Grimes said.

In June, Costner told People that he was “disappointed” with how the rumors surrounding his departure were handled by production.

“I liked the show. I liked the people on the show. I liked what it was about. I like that world,” he said at the time.

After the first half of the fifth season aired late last year, the show took a break for the holidays. They were set to return to filming at the top of the new year, but that was pushed back to sometime this summer.

While Costner was ready to continue, he said that “the scripts weren’t there.” “There was a point where that show stopped for me for 14 months… That’s a fact,” he said. “I could have done a lot of things at that time, but I wasn’t aware that that (robbery) would happen.”

Prior to the news that Paramount Network would release the final episodes of season five on November 10, Costner said he was well aware of the online buzz surrounding his departure and was not happy with the lack of support from production.

“I’ve read all the stories,” he said. “I was disappointed that no one on their side… ever stood up to defend what I was actually doing for them. There came a point where I thought, ‘Wow, when is someone going to say something about what I did to them? ‘ What haven’t I done?'”

Despite the disappointment, Costner told the outlet that he would still be interested in returning and tying up any loose ends.

“I always felt that… it could be an interesting time to come back and complete the mythology of this modern family,” he said in June. “And if that happens, I would get into it if I agreed with the way it was done.”

“In the end, I couldn’t do more than I had already done,” he added.

“Yellowstone” follows the Dutton family as they spend years trying to save their family ranch in Montana. The star-studded cast included Costner, as well as Grimes, Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser and Wes Bentley.

Although the series was set to end after season five, negotiations are currently underway for a sixth season of the Paramount show. Deadline reported.

No deals have been reached, sources told the newspaper in August, but “Yellowstone” will likely continue with Hauser and Reilly as leads. Costner will not be seen in the second half of season five.

Kelsey Asbille, who plays Kayce Dutton’s love interest Monica on “Yellowstone,” told Fox News Digital that she is not aware of a possible sixth season. “You’re asking me a difficult question. Don’t know. I don’t know anything,” she explained.
