Jon M. Chu’s highly anticipated and star-studded musical epic Bad saw the Los Angeles premiere on Saturday, held at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.

were present Part 1‘s main cast – in shades of iridescent pink and lush green – includes powerhouse duo Ariana Grande (who plays Glinda the Good Witch) and Cynthia Erivo (who plays Elphaba), as well as Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum and Ethan Slater. Bowen Yang was not present in the photo, likely due to his commitments as a featured player Saturday evening live. One of the most notable absences, however, was that of helmer Chu, who had a bit of a scheduling conflict as he waited for the birth of his fifth child.

Also on the red carpet were original Broadway cast members Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel, who originated the roles of Glinda and Elphaba on stage.

On November 22, the adaptation of the Tony-winning Broadway production based on Gregory Maguire’s bestselling novel, which tells the story of The Wizard of Oz from the perspective of the Wicked Witch of the West – follows the relationship between Elphaba and Glinda leading up to their ultimate fate.

Speaking to Deadline ahead of the premiere, stars Erivo and Grande opened up about their real-life friendship forged through the film’s intimacy and emotional honesty: “For some reason, we connected right away. Our voices really worked together. And I think we’ve been building from that moment on, and it’s been the most fruitful relationship of my life,” Erivo said.
