California approves stricter rules on carbon fuel policy – potentially raising gas prices – NBC 7 San Diego

Gas prices could soon rise as California strives to meet carbon emissions targets in a state that already faces some of the nation’s highest costs at the pump.

The California Air Resources Board voted Friday to update the state’s low-carbon fuel standard. The move is an effort to reach Governor Gavin Newsom’s goal of cutting emissions in half by 2030.

This decision will likely result in higher gas prices, according to market experts.

“The impact of the climate has affected inflation, so the climate has an impact on the economy. What I worry about is that this gas price increase will have a negative impact on people, especially at the bottom of the income distribution,” said University of San Diego economics professor Alan Gin.

According to AAA, the price of a gallon of regular gas is currently $4.51 in San Diego County.

Some drivers are nervous about what the future holds.

“Unfortunately, we can’t afford not to drive, and we can’t afford to upgrade to an electric vehicle. So we’re stuck. It affects the people who don’t have money the most,” San Diego driver Dana Crake told NBC 7.

CARB first adopted the low-carbon fuel standard in 2009. It is part of California’s long-term plan to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045.
